Planet Farage by Jackie Kay

Day 19 of 30. Poems Read from Scotland
7

I feel the need to start with an apology for bringing this man into the palm of your hand and onto your screen! It’s a stark contrast to some of the nature poetry and subtle explorations of identity and place that have filled space these past few weeks. That said, Jackie Kay has done such a thorough job of eviscerating the man and his world view that I felt able to share with confidence safe in the knowledge that you bang-on folk of Substack would get the whole shebang. For anyone not UK based who may not be familiar with the man who ‘brought us Brexit’ then have a google, package him up with the other cretins of a similar ilk and try not to be sick in your mouth. I really do feel that the whole Brexit movement kick started a chain reaction that is still playing out and instilled an apathy that only collaboration and solidarity can counteract.

Once you’ve rid yourself of the watery mouth grimness, then please do have a dig through Jackie Kay’s phenomenal poetry. She was our previous Makar and is a bonafide national treasure writing in English and Scots with an eye for details that brings her poetry to life and makes your own thoughts feel heard.

Poems Read from Scotland
I read poetry to help make sense of the chaos that swirls, and for 30 days from 21 March 2024 I'll be sharing one poem per day right here on daunder.substack.com. These poems will be favourites from writers old and new, known, and yet to be discovered and the posts will be short and in a mish-mash of styles that will muster mindfulness, cajole creativity and hopefully tickle your fancy. Please do lend an ear, comment, share and get involved.
